HDR and Wide Color Check

This page reads what your browser says about your display: colour gamut, dynamic range, colour depth and refresh rate. It then shows sRGB and Display P3 swatches side by side so you can see wide gamut for yourself.

About this tool

This page reads what your browser reports about the display: colour gamut, HDR support, colour depth and related settings. It reports capabilities. It does not measure the panel.

What this cannot tell you

A browser cannot confirm a monitor’s real HDR peak brightness, local dimming quality or whether HDR works end to end. A report of high dynamic range means the system says it can show HDR, nothing more. VRR, G-Sync and FreeSync also cannot be detected from a web page.

How to read the results

What the results mean

  • Colour gamut: sRGB is the standard range. P3 and Rec. 2020 are wider and show more saturated colours.
  • High dynamic range: the system reports it can show HDR content right now. If this says No on an HDR monitor, HDR is probably off in your operating system.
  • Colour depth: as reported by the browser, commonly 24 bits.

The swatch comparison

Each pair shows the same colour name in sRGB and in Display P3. On a wide-gamut display the P3 swatch looks richer. On an sRGB display they look identical, which is expected.

Turning HDR on

On Windows use Settings, System, Display, HDR. On macOS use System Settings, Displays, and the high dynamic range option for supported screens. Use a good cable and an HDR-capable port, then reload this page.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my HDR monitor say standard dynamic range?

HDR is probably off in your operating system, or the browser or cable path does not support it. Switch HDR on and reload.

Can this tell me my monitor's peak brightness?

No. Browsers do not expose it. Check the manufacturer's specification or independent reviews.

Do I need a P3 display?

No. It matters for photo and video editing and for HDR content. For general use sRGB is fine.

Can it detect G-Sync or FreeSync?

No. Variable refresh rate cannot be detected from a web page. Check your graphics driver or monitor menu.

My monitor is HDR but the page says No.

Turn HDR on in the operating system first, and use a browser that supports it. Some displays only report HDR when a video is playing.

Is a P3 report the same as HDR?

No. Wide colour gamut and high dynamic range are separate features. A display can have one without the other.
